Teeth Whitening in Arlington, VA

Whiten your teeth in office or at home at VCO Orthodontics in Arington, VA

What is the difference between in-office whitening and take-home tray whitening?

In-office whitening is done in our office and produces faster results in one visit. Take-home whitening uses custom trays and professional gel that you wear at home for about 1–2 weeks. Both methods are safe and effective — the main difference is speed and convenience.

Which whitening method works better?

Both methods use professional whitening gel and can achieve excellent results. In-office whitening works faster, while take-home trays often produce very stable, long-lasting whitening because the process happens gradually.

Teeth Whitening Frequently Asked Questions

Will teeth whitening damage my teeth?

No. Professional whitening does not damage enamel when used correctly. Whitening gel works by opening microscopic pores in the enamel and removing stains, then the enamel naturally remineralizes afterward.

Does whitening cause tooth sensitivity?

Some patients experience temporary sensitivity, especially to cold. This usually lasts 24–48 hours and can be reduced by using sensitivity toothpaste or spacing out whitening treatments.

How long does teeth whitening last?

Most whitening lasts 6 months to 2 years, depending on diet and habits. Coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking can cause staining over time. Many patients do small touch-ups with their trays once or twice per year.

Can I whiten my teeth while wearing braces or Invisalign?

Whitening is usually done after braces are removed, so the color is even. However, patients wearing Invisalign can sometimes whiten using their aligners as trays.

Will whitening work on crowns, veneers, or fillings?

No. Whitening only works on natural teeth. Crowns, veneers, and fillings will not change color, so whitening is usually done before replacing any restorations.

How white will my teeth get?

Teeth whitening removes stains and brightens teeth, but everyone has a natural color limit. Most patients see their teeth lighten several shades, resulting in a brighter, natural smile rather than an artificial white look.

Is store-bought whitening the same as professional whitening?

Over-the-counter products are weaker and not custom fit, so they often work slower and can cause more gum irritation. Professional whitening uses custom trays and stronger, safer gel for better and more predictable results.

Is teeth whitening safe for teenagers?

Yes, whitening is generally safe once most permanent teeth have erupted (usually mid-teens), but we evaluate each patient individually before recommending whitening.
